🚨 I’ll be live at noon ET🚨
We’ll finish off the questions from yesterday, debit spreads, my top stocks for day and swing trades, daily market analysis and a visit from Kane [tap to join us for the VIP Trade Room]!
Not all sell-offs are created equal, and right now we’re seeing two very different types of threats playing out at the same time.
On one side, AI stocks are taking a hit after a South Korean data center company had a disastrous debut, reigniting doubts about the sustainability of the AI spending boom.
Here’s the thing — this sell-off is driven by sentiment around a company most of us don’t even know about. What does it do? How does it compare with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) or Nvidia (NVDA)?
It’s esoteric. It’s a gut-reaction kind of move.
Stocks like Micron (MU), Marvell (MRVL), Sandisk (SNDK) and virtually every other chip stock fell in premarket trading yesterday because of this one company.
But this isn’t news-driven — it’s sentiment-driven. It’s like saying some kids aren’t cool, so maybe none of the kids are cool. That’s not how fundamentals work.
The technical picture still calls for caution. The sector is trading below its 50-day moving average (MA), and even a rebound to that level would not confirm a durable recovery.
Until it can break above the 100-day MA, the larger trend remains under pressure. Sentiment may be driving the weakness, but those technical barriers can keep prices from recovering quickly.
Why the Energy Situation Is Far More Dangerous
Now contrast that with what’s happening in energy. Crude oil climbed more than 2% after comments from Iran’s vice president increased fears of tighter control over the Strait of Hormuz. Traders are interpreting the remarks as a signal that Iran could intensify pressure on tankers, adding geopolitical risk to an already volatile market.
This is Economics 101 — crude oil is rising because of actual supply concerns tied to war and geopolitical instability. Unlike an isolated AI-related disappointment, higher oil prices can ripple through transportation, manufacturing, consumer spending and inflation.
I’m much more fearful of crude oil because it has a major impact on the economy, while the AI sell-off is primarily sentiment-driven. Be cautious, but understand what you’re dealing with.
Sentiment can shift. A fundamental threat such as an energy crisis doesn’t disappear just because the mood changes.
The Big Difference Between AI Stocks and the Dot-Com Era
Here’s what makes this different from the internet bubble of the 1990s — leading AI companies are actually making money, not just selling investors a vision of what might happen someday.
That’s a massive distinction.
We’re in earnings season, and anything can happen. If chip companies continue to deliver strong results and prove that AI spending is producing real revenue and profits, sentiment can change quickly.
Rumors and innuendo don’t carry the same weight when companies have solid earnings behind them.
Semiconductor stocks still need to prove this quarter that they’re making money rather than simply riding hype. So far, many have been delivering — and that’s why I’m not panicking about AI stocks the way I would if the industry were fundamentally broken.
The bottom line?
Technical weakness may limit the near-term upside in AI stocks, but profitable businesses can eventually overcome bad sentiment. A genuine energy shock is different because its economic consequences can persist long after the market’s mood changes.
I hope that helps!
