How I Identify Stocks Breaking Out for My Midday Watchlist

Here’s something most traders overlook: Stocks that break out in the middle of the day can be more revealing than those that surge at the market open. While everyone is grabbing lunch and the market is doing nothing, I’m scanning for stocks quietly making their move.

Let me walk you through how I identify these setups — because timing and context are everything.

The Lunchtime Test

Recently, I was reviewing my watchlist during lunch and asked the VIP Trade Room about Workday (WDAY): Why does this trade look attractive right now?

Before reading further, look at the setup like a quiz. The broader market is flat, WDAY has consolidated and it is now breaking above its daily high. What does that tell you?

It tells you WDAY is displaying exceptional relative strength. When the S&P 500 is going nowhere but WDAY is pushing through resistance, that divergence deserves attention.

The problem was volume.

Price can poke above resistance without committed buyers, so low-volume breakouts carry a greater risk of failure. I would not treat that signal the same as a breakout supported by expanding volume, but I would keep watching.

If volume arrives while price holds above the breakout level, the move becomes more convincing.

This pattern also explains why Moderna (MRNA) repeatedly returns to my radar. We have traded MRNA many times and may already have a position or spread when another setup appears.

That is not a reason to ignore it. Reliable trading comes from recognizing repeatable behavior, managing existing exposure and adapting the execution rather than abandoning a sound setup after one loss.

The Filters That Confirm a Move

Not every midday mover makes my watchlist. I want the chart to show a clear level, a logical trigger and behavior that fits the broader market.

Howmet Aerospace (HWM), for example, presented what I call a “gravity trade.” HWM touched a key level, moved below the volume-weighted average price and headed toward the eight-day moving average beneath VWAP.

On a chart, I would mark the rejected level, VWAP and the lower moving average. That creates a simple visual path showing where downside momentum may pull HWM next.

For upside breakouts, I want the opposite: price reclaiming or clearing an important level with participation. 3M (MMM) was breaking above its 50-day MA on high volume. That combination matters because volume suggests buyers are supporting the move rather than price merely drifting through resistance.

Midday action can also offer clues about institutions. Large participants rarely reveal their full intentions at once. They may accumulate shares quietly, defend a price area or let volume build gradually. Repeated support, tight consolidation and rising volume can expose that hidden demand before the move becomes obvious.

Context is key…

Buying an opening surge can mean chasing excitement. Finding a stock that holds firm, breaks a meaningful level and attracts volume while the broader market stalls can reveal genuine strength — and that is where the edge may be.

I hope that helps!
