No Juice, No Momentum — How I Know When Not to Trade

by | Aug 7, 2026

🚨 I’ll be on at 3 p.m. ET 🚨

Christian and I will share a top K.I.R.A. signal from this week and more [tap to join us]!

It’s that time of year…

And I’m going to be blunt with you — market internals are just dead right now. And I know that’s not what you want to hear, especially if you’ve made a lot of money over the past couple of weeks.

But here’s the thing about trading — knowing when to walk away is just as important as knowing when to load up. The market needs days like these when it simply does nothing. Today, the best move may be hitting the beach instead of hitting the buy button.

When Option Flow Goes Silent

I’ll give it to you straight: Paper’s dead and option flow is dead. Sure, we had some decent earnings events — big run-ups in Micron (MU) and SanDisk (SNDK) — but that doesn’t change the overall picture.

There’s not much juice or momentum in anything right now. That stagnation is showing up in volatility too. I thought about hedging with the VIX, but you just can’t because it doesn’t really move. When I checked, Sept. 16 expiration, $20 strike calls were going for $1.55, which I think is outrageous.

This is what a dead market looks like from an option-flow perspective. There’s no conviction, no momentum and no clear setup worth risking capital on. If there’s no flow, I usually don’t trade. Without that signal, you’re guessing instead of following the money, and I prefer to follow the big money.

The Discipline to Do Nothing

Here’s what separates traders who last from those who blow up — recognizing that every day is not going to be a banner day for trading. Recent gains don’t mean we have to keep pressing when conditions change.

Sometimes the smartest way to protect those profits is to sit on your hands.

I get it — this kind of market isn’t sexy. It’s not exciting. It’s very boring. But that doesn’t mean it’s unhealthy. Quiet sessions can give the market room to stabilize and reset before the next real opportunity develops.

So what’s my plan? I’ll probably continue day trading a little if anything, and then call it, hit the beach, go on the lake or do something else. Save your energy and capital for when the market gives you something worth trading.

This isn’t giving up — it’s playing smart. When the internals are dead and the flow dries up, the winning move is to step back. The market will be here tomorrow and so will the opportunities.

Order Flow:

This is for informational and educational purposes only. These are not official alerts issued by Lance, but rather some interesting orders picked by the team at Lance Ippolito Trading.

When you look at these plays, always take the market maker move into consideration.

You can be right on the direction but still lose money if the stock doesn’t move enough. That’s where the market maker move comes in clutch.

With puts, they’re often downside hedges in case a stock tanks, especially around earnings. The further out of the money they are, the more likely they are to be hedges.

Also be sure and check when the company’s earnings date is because many of the plays we post here are centered around earnings!

If a stock is really expensive, consider a spread to lower the cost.

And finally, always remember the golden rule when it comes to buying calls: Buy dips, sell rips — and don’t chase!

If a stock’s moved a ton already today, maybe wait for a pullback.

There is inherent risk in trading. Trade at your own risk.

Note: If no date is listed after the month, it’s the monthly expiration (third Friday).

P.S. Whether Out on a Fishing Boat or Relaxing on the Beach

Here’s a screenshot of what trading on the go with K.I.R.A. feels like:

With how easily accessible K.I.R.A. is…

I could be fishing on a boat, or “handling business” while beachside and still get my hands on some of the market’s highest-conviction trade opportunities…

As long as I’ve got my mobile phone on me!

That flexibility matters more than most traders realize.

Because opportunities don’t always appear when you’re perfectly prepared and sitting in front of multiple monitors.

Sometimes the best setups show up while you’re off living your life.

And K.I.R.A was designed to make sure you can still act on them.

Now of course no trading system can guarantee results.

But if you want to see how K.I.R.A. works… and how you can get started completely FREE…
