We’re seeing some big divergence to kick off the week, with the Dow down while the Nasdaq and S&P 500 are up to begin post-holiday trading.
The week will start out slow because it usually takes hedge fund managers a bit longer to get back to work. We had some of the lowest volume all year on Friday heading into the weekend.
Volume on Friday was 40 million contracts compared to 72 million on average. It may seem the summer doldrums have already begun, but I don’t think this will be a slow summer ahead of the election.
We have several Fed speakers on deck again this week, but the big news will be Consumer Confidence at 10 a.m. ET today, and gross domestic product at 8:30 a.m. ET on Thursday.
So even though I don’t believe the week will start off with a bang, things could start to pick up late Wednesday.
