The January Effect has officially started to take hold as we approach the last full trading day of the year — and more in Thursday’s stock market recap.
The markets will be open for the full day on Friday, Dec. 31. However, the bond market will close early.
For the last few trading days of this year, we’ve seen a bit more volatility than we usually do during this time period.
We’re also starting to see indications of the January Effect, a theory that the markets rise in January more than any other month of the year. And I expect us to rally into the first week of the new year.
Elsewhere in the news, the International Trade in Goods and Services report on Wednesday was solid. So I don’t expect any surprises from Thursday’s jobless claims.
In this morning’s stock market recap video, you’ll learn why manufacturing data is crucial right now… the top sector to watch for more upside… two sectors that are underperforming the market… whether there’s still more downside in bonds… the difference between an ascending and descending triangle… and my top ETF with an option pick and levels.

Each Thursday, I’ll combine two of my favorite things into a big-money opportunity: options plays and ETFs. Using options, we can turn momentum analysis of a specific sector — or even an entire country’s stock market — into an actionable trade with double- or triple-digit upside potential. I’ll give you all the details you need to execute this plan.
Check back each morning for Roger’s Radar and the most important news and numbers in the WealthPress stock market recap.
